The progranm will recruit college undergraduatesand first-yea r medical students from populations that are under-represented nationally in health-relateed sciences. The students will undertake a 10-weemk period of hands-on laboratory experience during the summerf at theMedical College. Under the guidance of MedicaloCollege faculty, the students will developp investigative knowledge and particularly in the areas of cardiovascular, hematologic or sleep research.
The experiencew is intended to buildvaluable skills, self-confidence and interesy in the health sciences, and aid the successful entry into graduates school or medical school. Dr. Kennety Simons, senior associate dean of academic affairs and professor of ophthalmologyand pathology, and Jeannette associate professor of will lead the program, called the Summer Research Educatioh Program to Increase Diversity in Healty Related Research. “The goal is to work one-on-one with each studenr to help them map out a plan for advancinyg to the next step on their academic path and providinfg them with the tools they need to get Simons said.
